What it does
Transposing a recording is the ordinary fix for a song that sits wrong for the person singing it. Two semitones down and a chorus that was a shout becomes something you can hold; three up and a backing track finally fits a higher voice. The arrangement, the tempo and the feel all stay exactly as they were.
Doing that without changing the length is harder than it sounds, because pitch and duration are physically the same thing in a recording. Playing a track faster raises it; the only way to raise it without speeding it up is to stretch the audio in time first, then compress it back. That is what happens here, using an overlap-based stretch that aligns each segment with the waveform before it so the phase stays coherent and you do not get the fluttering that naive methods produce.
The tape-style behaviour is available too, as a switch. Turn tempo preservation off and the track speeds up as it rises, the way a record played at the wrong speed does — which is sometimes the actual goal rather than a side effect.

What you get

Transposing a backing track is useless if it also gets faster. Keeping the length is the default; the tape behaviour is one switch away when the sped-up sound is the point.
A couple of semitones is transparent. Beyond about seven, time-stretching artefacts become audible on sustained vocals no matter which tool you use — worth knowing before you blame the file.

One to three semitones is essentially transparent on most material. Four to seven is usable with a slight shimmer on long held notes. Beyond an octave in either direction, everything sounds obviously processed. That ceiling is inherent to time-stretching, not specific to this tool.
Because preserving the tempo means resegmenting and overlapping the audio, and long steady tones are where the seams are easiest to hear. Smaller intervals reduce it. If the shimmer bothers you more than the speed change would, turn tempo preservation off.
