What it does
Converting MP3 to MIDI is not a file conversion. An MP3 is a recording — a single waveform holding every instrument at once. A MIDI file holds no sound at all: it is a list of instructions saying which note starts when, how long it lasts and how hard it was played. Going from one to the other means listening to the audio and working out what was played, which is transcription.
That is why a plain converter cannot do it. Our pipeline separates your upload into its parts first, then reads each part on its own and writes out the notes it finds. You get a real Standard MIDI File — not an audio file with a different extension.
Once it is MIDI you can do things that are impossible with a recording: change the key without artefacts, swap the piano for a string section, fix one wrong note, quantise the timing, or print the part as sheet music.

How it works
Most tracks are done in about a minute and a half.

The track is split into its parts, and each part is analysed for note pitch and timing independently. Reading a clean part instead of a full mix is what keeps the result usable.

Every note carries pitch, a start and end time in seconds, and a velocity. That is the difference between a MIDI file you can actually work with and a flat grid of equal-length blocks.
Every detected note carries four values — that is what makes it editable.
Vocals and instrumental are pulled apart first, so the melody line is not fighting the chords for attention. You get a MIDI file per part rather than one muddled take on the whole mix.
Separating first is why the transcription is clean: each part is read on its own instead of as one blurred mix.

No, and no tool can promise that. Transcription is an interpretation of a recording — dense mixes, heavy distortion, reverb-soaked parts and unpitched percussion are all genuinely hard to read. Clear, monophonic material like a solo piano, a lead vocal or a bassline comes out closest. Expect a strong starting point that you tidy up, not a perfect copy.
MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC and OGG, up to 20MB per file. WAV and FLAC are lossless and tend to transcribe slightly better than a low-bitrate MP3, but the difference is small compared to how clean the performance is.
Because we separate the audio before transcribing it. You get a file for the vocal line and one for the instrumental part, which is far more useful than a single file with everything overlapping on one track. If a part contains no detectable pitched notes — a pure drum loop, for instance — no file is produced for it.
Not well, and that is inherent to the format rather than a limitation here. MIDI notes describe pitch, and most percussion has no clear pitch. Kick, snare and hi-hat can be detected as hits but the result is rarely worth using. Melodic and harmonic material is what this is for.

Learning from it, practising it and analysing it are ordinary uses.

Piano is the best case. A solo piano recording is exactly what note transcription handles well: clear pitches, distinct onsets, no unpitched noise. The result usually needs far less clean-up than a full band mix.
Velocity is written into every note so the part is not flat, but treat the values as a sensible baseline rather than a measurement of the original performance. Dynamics are the first thing to adjust once the file is in your DAW.
