What it does

A file at a different speed, not just a playback setting

Most players have a speed control, and for listening that is usually enough. It stops being enough the moment you need the result as a file — to send to a student, to put under a video, to load into an app that plays at one speed, or to keep for the twentieth time you practise the same passage.

This produces the file. Slowing to 0.75× or 0.5× makes a fast run playable and a mumbled line intelligible; speeding to 1.25× or 1.5× turns an hour of talking into forty minutes. In both directions the pitch stays exactly where it was by default, so a slowed guitar solo is still in the same key you have to play it in.

The alternative behaviour is one switch away. Turn pitch preservation off and speed and pitch move together, the way a tape or a record does — slower and lower, or faster and higher. If it is that sound you are after with reverb on top, the slowed and reverb page is set up for it.

Speed changer questions

Not here, unless you ask for it. By default the audio is stretched or compressed in time with the pitch held where it was, so a voice at 1.5× is the same voice talking faster. Switch pitch preservation off and you get the physical behaviour instead: faster is higher, slower is lower.

Down to about 0.7× is clean. At half speed you will hear a slight warble on sustained notes — the signature of holding pitch while stretching time. Speech tolerates it better than music does. Below a quarter speed nothing sounds good, which is why that is the limit.

That page is one specific sound: playback slowed with the pitch dropping along with it, plus a large reverb. This one is a general-purpose tool that holds the pitch by default and has no reverb at all. If you want the aesthetic, use that page; if you want a usable file at a different speed, use this one.

Yes — put an MP3 in and choose MP3 on the way out, at 128 to 320kbps. Or take a WAV if you would rather not re-encode. Any format your browser can decode works as an input, video files included.
